It is quite easy to spend several days at Lamayana without feeling the need to go anywhere else. There are endless opportunities to relax- in a hammock beneath a Podo tree, lying on a warm river rock watching the river flow by, indulging in a hot bath or simply meditating on the mountain in all its changing moods. The river is a wonderful place to explore, jumping from rock to rock, fishing, taking a cold plunge! Our lawns provide plenty of space for badminton or an impromptu football game, and kids can bring their bikes and cycle around the farm.
For children, Lamayana is a paradise, with a zip-line, tree house and swings as well as all the usual fun of camping and outdoor life. And there is the farm itself. Children will love helping with the milking, collecting eggs or digging for a bunch of carrots for lunch.
Lamayana is a bird watcher’s paradise with its varied ecosystem, attracting parrots, birds of prey, water birds and a myriad of sunbirds. You might find otter scat on a river bench in the morning, and, if you are a lucky, even hear a hyena call at night. There are walks around the farm, along the river, or up to the local dam with views of Mt Kenya and Aberdares on either side. Nearby you can visit the Mau Mau caves, or the waterfalls of the Burguret, or more ambitious hiking trails on the lower slopes of the mountain.
Lamayana is positioned at the centre of some of Kenya’s most stunning attractions. Mt Kenya itself is only a twenty-minute drive up the road, with the conservancies of Ol Pejeta and Solio just west of the Nanyuki road. Beyond Nanyuki is the Ngare Ndare forest with its blue waterfalls and canopy walk. Nanyuki, less than half an hour’s drive from the farm, is a vibrant up and coming town with a number of restaurants and cafes, as well as supermarkets and other amenities.
